about westerly, rhode island
Westerly Rhode Island is a beachfront town on the southwestern shoreline of Washington County. It lies along the Pawcatuck River across from Pawcatuck, Connecticut. Within the town are the villages of Westerly, Bradford, White Rock, and Potter Hill and the resorts of Weekapaug, Misquamicut, and Watch Hill.
Westerly was first settled by English colonists in 1661 and incorporated as a municipality in 1669. There are two different theories as to how Westerly got its name. Most say it is because of the geographic location as the western-most town in Rhode Island, while others say it was named after the village of Westerleigh in South Gloucestershire, England, as this was the home of one of Westerly’s founding fathers.
Westerly is home to beautiful beaches, delicious restaurants, unique shopping, and many family fun activities. Some of the popular landmarks of Westerly include The Ocean House, Atlantic Beach Park, Granite Theater, Grey Sail Brewing, Watch Hill Light House and the Flying Horse Carousel.
The population of Westerly nearly doubles in the summer, when it becomes a popular tourist destination. Its well-known beaches include Weekapaug Beach, Westerly Town Beach, Misquamicut State Beach, East Beach, and Watch Hill Beach.
